Oratorium of 8 monitors and prepared video player

“Oratorium voor een videoplayer en acht monitoren is een video-installatie waarin Frank Theys de relatie beeld/drager in haar essentie toont maar ook het statuut van de hedendaagse kunstenaar in vraag stelt. Op acht naar elkaar gerichte monitoren is steeds dezelfde man te zien die het bekende supporterslied ‘You ‘ll never walk alone’ zingt. De videoband werd uit zijn cassette gehaald en legt omheen de staanders van de monitoren een parcours af door de ruimte. Het beeld ondersteunt zichzelf (supporter) en haar eigen drager (support) onophoudelijk. Het is een oratorium waarin de onlosmakelijke band tussen beeld en drager wordt bezongen en waarin de traditionele beeld/drager relatie in vraag wordt gesteld. Emanatie had een andere titel voor dit werk kunnen zijn. De emanatieleer waarin wordt gesteld dat alle dingen, zonder discontinuïteit binnen de ontwikkeling, voortvloeien uit het hoogste beginsel, wordt hier op een extreme wijze gevisualiseerd. Frank Theys brengt een gesloten circuit waarin het beeld haar eigen ingewanden/drager aanschouwt. Een continue herhaling van klank en beeld, een continue verbondenheid tussen beeld en drager maken een cirkelbeweging die zoals de emanatieleer elke creativiteit uitsluit. Is een kunstenaar iemand die tot creatief handelen in staat is of moet hij voorgesteld worden als een goddelijke figuur die het product van zijn ingewanden aanschouwt?”
